Affordable, fun food
January 10, 2007 by turtledawn

This is a copy of the review for the other Gumbo Ya Ya, because they are essentially the same place. Same recipes, same format, same delicious, affordable food.

Gumbo Ya Ya is not Italian. I have no idea how that tag got there- it's Cajun and Creole, all the way. Each day there are nine sauces on offer, including at least two vegetarian options; most of these can be had over white rice or penne pasta, with the exception of the gumbo- only available on rice. Sadly one of the veggie options is almost always succotash which I personally despise, but no matter. Maque Choux is easily my favorite, a rich creamy roux with chunks of prosciutto and crawfish, but I have never had a bad meal out of Gumbo Ya Ya. You also never have to wait more than five minutes, and that's only if there are people in line ahead of you.

Food is available in two sizes- small covers the (normal foodservice dinner sized) plate except the corner where the tasty tasty garlic bread sits and costs $5. Large fills the entire plate and your garlic bread sits on top, for the budget-friendly price of $6. Drinks are $1.25 each for fountain soda, free refills. Get the bread pudding for dessert, if you have any room- it's fabulous. They serve Abita beer and a few other brands. Tax included in all prices.
