With No American Cheese or White Bread in Sight
January 11, 2007 by Random Accuracy

Chedd's has the distinction of being the only gourmet grilled cheese restaurant in the lower, upper, and middle Denver region. The flagship restaurant is located in the newly renovated apartment complexes a couple blocks east of the metro area where street parking is ample and free (very rare for the area).

Chedd's menu focuses on the grilled cheese and it's many incarnations. They have about 10 named specialty sandwiches, but I think the gold egg at this place is the Make-your-own grilled cheese option. They boast 35 different cheeses to choose from (American cheese excluded), 10 or so different types of breads and a variety of meats and veggies to add to the sandwich. I ended up getting a Dill Havarti and Horseradish Cheddar on Sour Dough with a couple veggies to make it a little more crunchy (and to fake myself into thinking the sandwich was anywhere near healthy). It took about 5 minutes for them to make each sandwich and I'll have to admit it was the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had. Note: they are not shy with buttering the bread and combined with the cheese, this might be the greasiest sandwich you've ever enjoyed (honest to God, my napkin was see through when the meal was over)

The atmosphere is that of a standard sandwich shop, with a couple various mismatched tables and a window bar. The decor is what I can only describe as fiercely Wisconsin with state maps, banners, cheese hats, and numerous Wisconsin license plates adorning the walls (incidentally, there is a standing offer of a free sandwich for anyone willing to bring in and hand over one of said license plates). Light 90s craptastic billboard top 20 tunes were playing on their muzac this night, but quiet enough to tune out most the meal.

For 2 sandwiches, chips and drinks it ended up costing about 17 bucks. The additional cheese, meats and veggies costs extra on top of the base $5.50 per sandwich. This is comfort food first and foremost. Delicious cheesy goodness that makes you feel warm inside, but not something your going to want to eat every day.
